Toy Commander (Dreamcast Game)

Toy Commander (Dreamcast Game)

The selection of strategy games based on the Dreamcast can be counted on one hand with fingers left over, so when it was time to pick out a game for my new Dreamcast, I thought I'd give this one a try.

The storyline is pretty much unimportant- Andy is battling his oldest toy, Huggy Bear, for title of Toy Commander. You take control of various toy airplanes, helicopters, trucks & tanks which fly, drive and shoot "real" weapons.

Although it's not a driving game or a flight simulator or a tank or helicopter simulator, you get to play with all these as you fly & drive through an intricately detailed 3D "Virtual Reality" house complete with kitchen, garage, bedrooms and hallways. Most of the objects within the house actually work- you can turn on the stove, shoot wine glasses and knock items over. (I love shooting the cat with the toy tank gun!)

Each mission is completely unique, and often surprising in it's originality. For example, in one early mission, the object of the mission is to knock some eggs into a pot of water and turn on the stove while driving a toy tank!

The controls are easy to learn, even though there are multitudes of vehicles, and the main effort lies in figuring out the best way to accomplish your mission. This game gets high marks for originality and it's often tempting to just forget the mission and simply "play" with the vehicles, flying around the fireplace and shooting at the cat or driving over the ramps and generally exploring.
